There are dozens of online auction sites on the internet and they work differently, however the basic concepts work like this:

1. A vendor goes to the auction site and fills out a simple online form.   On this form they they fill out all the information about their product, including the minimum bid they will accept and the length of the auction.
2. This information then becomes available to online buyers.
3. Buyers then bid on the items of their choice via the internet.
4. If a buyer gets out bid by another buyer, they will be notified by an email message.   The email will include a link back to the site where they can increase their bid.
5. Finally, once the bidding time period is over, the top bidder and seller are emailed.   (the duration of the auction is set by the seller, it can vary from one day, or  the popular choice which is one week.  This email contains the other person's email address, so that they can get together and close the sale.
